About CompactPCI Compact PCI started to become popular round year 2000. Electrical it is the same PCI bus as in desktop PCs but buit into a more industrial form factor to be more robust and flexibel. There is two formfactors that dominates. 3U ( europe form factor) and 6U heigt. A standard backplane can have 8 boards but it exists backplanes with built in bridges to be able to carry 16 boards controlled by one CPU.
